Meet E. muscae, the fungus that turns flies into zombies.
It infects insects and consumes fats and other nutrients for a few days. Then it goes after the organs and starts to control the brain.
The flies climb up a tall object such as a plant; their proboscis sticks to the surface due to a fungal secretion. At sunset, the wings get raised and fungal spores shoot out infecting other flies.
Specialized fungal genes and circadian rhythms drive the macabre process.
