I think there are many strong examples of robust power grids powered by renewables, including here in Canada. BC, MB, QC, NL & YT all generate 90%+ of their electricity from hydro; augmenting that with solar / wind would be affordable, straightforward, and welcomed by First Nations partners. Uruguay's example of mixed sources shows that battery storage can be optional extra.

Texas is moving in the right direction, but fossil fuels still make up the majority of their power supply, with wind just 23%, and solar just 14%. Texas' GDP is ~$3 trillion; if they really want to diversify their grid, they have all the leverage they need.

As linked earlier, battery storage has helped Texas weather the worst of their power supply challenges over the last few months, with no outages in spite of record demand. It's not the only answer, but whatever works!
