Finished Metallic Child!

Current day devs should take notes: this is how you bring older game ideas back to life. Everything about this game's narrative elements and aesthetics screamed Mega Man with whole new sounds. The devs are clearly fans of Rock, but they went their own way in designing a fun, engaging, and aesthetically pleasing game.

The gameplay itself was something I've not seen elsewhere: rogue-like dungeon generation with beat-em-up combat and a deceptively simple power-up system. Rona's moveset was highly varied and made it fun to knock enemies around and get knocked around by enemies.

Of very special note is the game's presentation. The player is addressed personally as a human on Earth with a camera view of a space station wherein the plot and gameplay unfold. At the start of the game, he (or she, whatever) is given complete remote control of Rona, a taboo action but one necessary to revive her and save the Earth from a collision with the space station. The level of immersion this facilitates is more than most games of this or any caliber can muster and puts any FPS game to shame with its ingenuity and emotional impact.

Oh, one more thing: there are two shmup stages and they were loads of fun and very pleasant surprises.

9/10, strongly recommended. The only drawback is the game's relatively short length. However, the ending left things open for a sequel I hope materializes for a console I own.
