One of the most irksome aspects of the "we don't have to explain it, it's M-A-G-I-C!" is how the follow-up question "OK, what's magic?" is also often ignored.
Which is usually a missed opportunity for worldbuilding and lazy writing, esp. as magic is usually one of three and a half things: a manipulation of a resource in the natural world of the story; a boon or trade with a supernatural being; or access to the operating system of the universe.
