possibly controversial opinion:
.
The nut is too high if you press an open string down at the first and you can see it move.
.
hold a string down anywhere else and press it down for the next fret and you hardly see it move at all, I mean if your guitar is playable. I mean, I’m not usually wearing my specs. 😘
.
If you have trouble playing F chords or Bflats, this is surely why, because the nut is five times higher than anything else.
.
I can totally see and feel these moving and so I’m out to shop for a needle file at Home Depot before I try to do it with the wrong tools and before I have to go buy one at Stew Mac.
.
ADDING: I thought I’d been keeping my calluses, playing a little every day, but when I picked this up as it is now, I felt immediately, This isn’t small enough for me, and where did my calluses go? That’s what a high nut feels like. I mean, I did hope to get it smaller, but it was within range at the easy end, except it doesn’t feel like it at present.
.
I understand they have to build it with some room, it’s going to matter the gauge of the strings and such. The slots won’t rise with time, if anything they may sink a little.
.
Plus it sucks to go too far and having to glue something tiny but hard back in there, etc.
.
But labour is money and quality, if someone spends this extra time tweaking the nut down, I guarantee they’ll love their guitar more. 💜
