I rewatched #EncounterAtFairpoint and it reads so much differently now that it is established that Q can rewrite history. He is very clearly there to keep Picard and the crew from making a huge mistake, but because of all of his ham-handed bluster and charades, they have no idea that he is actually helping and are completely ungrateful.
