My son is an experienced horseman and was helping a guide with a tour once and they lost three pack animals down a ravine. The horses only sustained minor injuries but the gear was scattered all over the slope. One person stayed with the animals along the river while the rest of the party turned back for help. It took them three days to walk them downstream to where they could climb out!
