A non-native speaker of English recently brought to my attention the ridiculous arbitrariness of “phrasal verbs” and how hard it is to keep straight things like “run into” and “run out of,” which have completely unrelated meanings, neither of which have anything to do with going into or out of anything, and neither of which involve running. I had never even noticed that.
