It's more about not putting yourself at the mercy of someone who will consider your their personal property, or find themselves in that role if the future keeps going south.

Bonus: If more people normalized the concept of not getting married, more people would not get into bad marriages for the sake of being married as if just the concept of marriage in and of itself is a virtue.

Not a perfect solution, just a small improvement over the status quo.
