No cleaning is required if using the same ink and the pen was writing ok. Only need to clean if changing ink or some problem exists.

Screw down the plunger of the converter before putting the pen into the ink bottle. The idea is to keep most of the old ink out of the bottle. You could contaminate your bottle with fungus or dirt otherwise.
