- I'm sorry to bring this to your attention. I feel roughly the same way.
I think the problem is that for many people "rationalism" and "effective altruism" amount to a substitute for religion: not about God, but still a total worldview with an answer to all life's biggest questions. Combine this with the idea that we must create an AI that acts like a benevolent god, or maximize utility for our eventual future descendents across the universe, and it unlocks so many religion-like patterns of behavior that it spawn cults: power pyramids where the people on top, usually men, exploit those below.
