After a cremation any bones which have survived the fire are removed from the ashes by two relatives who use special chopsticks. They pass the bones to each other to be stored carefully and this is the only (?) time when ‘items’ are transferred in this way. It is certainly unacceptable to do it with food.
That’s my understanding. Interested to hear if others know more about this.
