There have been a couple of posts about how higher education institutions should build their own LMS's. You're not wrong, but that's never going to happen.

Welcome to the world of build vs buy in enterprise software.

The enterprise software conversation almost always starts at the same place: "How do I aggregate [metric/information] into one place?" The problem is that the organization is so large that each team is probably doing something a little different. There's a desire to centralize.

To build enough customizability to centralize is going to take years, and hiring a team to do it. Then there's the cost of maintenance.

That's why it's so hard to get rid of Oracle, SAP, IBM, Salesforce... It becomes deeply embedded as a part of the organizational infrastructure.

Sure, you can have a new exec come in to try to replace it. Maybe even build it in house! But these projects fail so often because of how entrenched the old systems are. It takes a long time to rebuild all the integrations.

None of this is easy. Now layer on politics, money issues, and everyone else having a day job, and you'll never make your own thing.

Edit: has a good follow up thread to this post too. https://hachyderm.io/@inthehands/116539194269365027
