Well, it isn't dumb to worry though. Especially when you consider it was being worked on in a lab so, unlike the Spanish flu, we had a real reason to worry that "this could be different". I was definitely very actively learning everything I could about COVID when I started hearing about it.
I even remember when they released the genome and certain sources were right away saying "this can't be natural based on the genetics alone". They took a bat virus and did gain of function experimentation on it. What their ultimate purpose behind this was is harder to know. They will say "vaccine research" but who knows. A lot of these things are dual use.
