Also learned from the article he was a Navy vet, but per Wikipedia:
"In 1955, he resigned from the Navy at the rank of lieutenant, junior grade, forced to accept an 'other than honorable' discharge and leave the service rather than be court-martialed because of his homosexuality."
And per a note, he forged honorable discharge papers for employment, and I assume later repeatedly claimed he had been dishonorably discharged, which requires that court martial he avoided.
