We certainly weren’t expecting to find Pelecanus onocrotalus | the great white pelican on the Curonian Spit, but here they are, seemingly on vacation in the moat surrounding Lietuvos jūrų muziejus | the Lithuanian Sea Museum (📷1). Other bird sightings included cormorants in a colony on South Pier, overhead cranes, mute swans and the great crested grebe. Corynephorus canescens | grey hair-grass is native to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, seen here on the Dead Dunes where it is typical (📷2). It’s well-adapted to the lack of water and will roll its leaves into tubes when dry or unroll them given sufficient moisture. There’s beauty to be found here in the absence of life, as in the way the wind carves waves into the dunes (📷3) or how the sea smooths and polishes multicoloured pebbles (📷4).
