I wish I could have a reasonable discussion about AI, but I feel like I'm stuck between extremes.
On one side you have people who are talking about AI not in terms of its functionality, but the same grifting way they talked about NFTs or cryptocurrency a few years ago. These people won't STFU about it.
On the other side, you have people who only want to tell me that AI is the proverbial devil, sent by evil demons to destroy the world, and anyone who so much as visits ChatGPT is morally irredeemable.
My position is neither extreme and is far more concerned about issues of autonomy- not "Should we have AI?" but "Who's AI do we have and under what kind of control?" Who trains it? What are the privacy implications, etc?
I'm not worried about intellectual property theft, but about the functional death of the digital commons.
I see the amazing things AI has done for me, and am fearful of the ways that our society is entirely ill-prepared for the impacts it will have on our lives.
