As I've been posting a but recently on the price of gold & the position of gold as a hedge against crisis, this chart from the International Monetary Funds, Finance & Development magazine is a useful bit of historical context....
Unsurprisingly gold could only really function as a hedge once the price cap was removed/failed in the 1970s but its also interesting to note the character of the crisis which prompted significant inflationary demand for gold over the years.
