I need the yarn to be in hanks for the dyeing process, and as I am a one person business I simply don't have the capacity to convert hundreds of hanks I dye into cakes. It isn't really to do with the cost of the equipment but rather the time it takes.
Also the theory about the tension of cakes vs hanks is very true. Unless you're going to use the yarn as soon as it is caked, it is better for it to remain in a hank.
