I know, I know, elections are bullshit and aren't actually a mechanism for political transformation (preferring instead to uphold structures of representation, hierarchy, and law). But, with that said, and out of the way, let's talk about why this election matters in the immediate, imminent, strategic sense.
When I am talking about an election mattering, I am not talking about policy. Though policy does have an impact in our lives, we all know that this is not a mechanism to achieve much of anything. Elections are, in the US context, often a triggering and gathering point for dynamics that stretch outside of the electoral realm.
We are also not going to be concerning ourselves with long term political speculations. When I am talking about the relevance of the election I am not going to be talking about periods of time much beyond a couple of months from now. Our concern here is not about whether a healthcare plan is going to be passed in two years, or what the dynamics of Congress are at the moment and how that impacts mid-terms or something. That stuff is ...fine...but it is not the world of politics that we are concerned with or that we intervene in.
I want us to shift our focus on the election away from who is going to win or lose, what swing states are going to vote what way, and things like Project 2025. Rather, I want us to focus our attention on the points where we saw acute conflict aggregate during the last election cycle, the period that happened after the election, but before the inauguration.
