"making all the Big Tech firms pay everyone a decent wage"

Call me crazy, but I don't think earning a "livable wage" should be constrained to Big Tech. I think *all* employers, should pay a livable wage: as a *bare minimum*.

Lamentably, last I checked, there is currently not a single place in the USA, where the so-called "minimum wage" (not just Federal, but state and city local minimum wage levels) assuming a 40 hour work week, where it is sufficient to pay for the median rent.

In other words: we're beyond a crisis point when it comes to capitalism and the rich assholes are happy to keep getting richer while the poor and disenfranchised seem to be getting poorer and more disenfranchised.

People formed unions, and fought and died for things such as the 40 hour work week, right?

People fought and died for the end to slavery.

Yet the USA? Never put an end to slavery. The 13th Amendment makes slavery, conditional. For profit prisons, are still a thing in the USA. Even with the "progressive" politics of California voters? Failed to pass a proposition in 2024 which would have (at least on a state level) closed the carceral slavery loop hole.

So, it seems as if we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past, because they were never corrected. I can't even begin to imagine how many of our ancestors are rolling in their graves seeing the current state of affairs.

Engineering and ethics are great ideals, I won't argue there; but I'll write this much:

Supposedly, within the carceral slavery system, the *best paid* jobs are web developers. They can earn as much as $18, an hour.

I have been paid less, that, as a "free" man, doing similar work, in recent years.

Which is to say: carceral slavery, undermines the pay scale of so-called "honest" information workers too.

As far as I can discern: there are small number rich assholes who exploit others, and there are many poor people who are being exploited, and everything else, so far, is wishful thinking.

Better can exist, but most of human existence is just another ring of hell from my vantage for now.
