This photo was taken about fifty years ago.
There is a back story.
My much older sister tried to talk me into letting her raise my daughter. She reasoned that she was wealthy, had already raised her kids and that as a fifteen year old mom I was dooming myself and my daughter to a life of poverty and misery.
She said my daughter would live her summers in Canada and winters in Hawaii and she would want for nothing if I relinquished custody.
I loved my sister but stood firm in my resolve to keep my daughter.
Eventually she gave up.
I never believed that anyone could give my child more love than I could. I still believe that.
These dresses and sunglasses my sister sent were the closest my daughter and her cousin got to Hawaii. Very cute.
We were never doomed we were just poor.
I know my experience might not have been typical but it was mine and I wouldn't change a thing because my daughter turned out to be a happy wonderful human and my dearest friend.
