About two weeks (or so) ago, my desktop froze up. The keyboard restart shortcut wouldn’t work. I ended up having to unplug it. Once it had had a minute, I replugged it and turned it back on. It was fine, sort of, but for one thing. All my bookmarks (all of them!) were gone. I could not set new ones. It was the strangest thing. I put it on my master-to-do-list to take the whole darned thing to town for someone to look at it (and do the updates I can’t do here because of slow internet).
Then, yesterday, the power went out. It was only out for a minute or two. I restarted my computer once the power was back on. All is fine. But. All my bookmarks are back?
I am so confused.
Anyhow, I decided that having a battery packup would be a good idea. Brief power outages are pretty common, here (resetting clocks is like a whole hobby for me), and protecting the computer from that seems like a good idea. So, for any of my lovely followers who have experience with this, may I have your opinion?
Thanks @axiolotl for your reccommendation! I got a CyberPower something-or-other. Finding an instruction sheet for start-up a surprise, but it ended up just being
Plug it in 8 hours before you use it, so you can start off with a full charge and
turn it off and unplug it before plugging your computer in. Then replug it and turn it on.
That part’s a little concerning, because I’m not altogether certain I’ll remember that if I have to move things or change coomputers down the road. I may make a little sign, laminate it, and paste it to the baseboard behind the unit. Also - I had little tags on all my plugs, saying which was the lamp, printer, etc. Where did my tags go?
I moved a bureau, lamented the heaps of dust and cobwebs behind it (WAAAAAH!) plugged in the Thing, and waited. Then unplugged it and the tan power strip I’m replacing, swapped the cables around, and got things started back up. Guess what? More dust behind the desk. Blech.
Things seem ok, and I should be less inconvenienced by the semi-frequent mini-outages we get. It does beep loudly when there’s an outage, but so does my microwave and oven. Delightful at 3am, to be sure.
