I've spent lots of time in restaurants like this. They're all over my hometown.

Yes, there's tile on the wall, boxes in the corner, and fluorescent lights.

There's a few dishes I gravitate towards: BLT sandwich, congee, curry chicken.

As for drinks, it's always hot milk tea. But if I'm feeling adventurous, and it always an adventure, I go for yeunyeung -- which is three parts coffee, seven parts milk tea. Yeunyeung will wake you up.

The waitresses don't speak English fluently, so I either just tell them the menu number or point to what I want.

Always say, "m goi" to the waitresses after you finish ordering. It means "Thank you" in Cantonese. And if you *really* like their service, smile at them and say "m goi sai" which is a more emphatic way of thanking them.

These restaurants always give you a lot of food. It's a bad idea to finish it in one sitting, so get a to go box. It makes for a great lunch the next day.

My wife loves these places. They're an important part of our lives.
