I had some kind of "runners high" when I started running more seriously -- from 3-5 km my runs went up to 10, 15, sometimes even 20 km. I guess the body is adjusting to the much higher/longer load and produces plenty of natural painkillers to compensate for the initial pain and strain. But then, if you keep running such longer distances (between 10 and 20 km), the body will gradually adjust to them and you won't need these painkillers and so less will be produced. :)
