I share your wondering. This was right after his wife died and of courae WW2 (like the Wikipedia article describes, he had a very hard time) and right before he was committed to an asylum for the rest of his life, so there could be a combination of forces at work, but I like to think that he knew exactly what he was doing. It makes me want to go look more closely at others of his works, to see if there are clues there, too, to deeper meanings.
