One year ago today, former Finnish president Sauli Niinisto recalled his 2022 telephone conversation with Putin, in which he informed the Russian leader that Finland intended to join NATO.
Putin reportedly remained calm, telling him Finland was making a mistake.
“The Americans will take military command,” Putin warned. “I hope you keep some independence.”
Niinisto replied: “I’ll still be the one appointing my generals.”
According to Niinistö, Putin laughed.
