#WordWeavers 2026.09.21 — In your current WIP, which character do you relate to the least and why?I relate to all the characters in my current WIP because I want the reader to see them as real in both their good and horrible dimensions, even the antagonists. Nobody is saintly, and in the Reluctance Series, no saint is perfect. This is *not* always true. In another story I wrote a goonish misogynist steroid-using prizefighter whose technique was to frighten opponents or victims into thinking he'd murder them before, figuratively, doing just that. Gleefully. More so against female opponents. I think the reader relates to the various injuries and humiliations the MC inflicts on the poor excuse for a human.
In the WIP, the closest is Pigeon the Pilferer, a punk gangster co-worker antagonist who causes the MC unending headaches, stealing into her apartment, roughing up one of her friends, beating her up (well, she started it), and other indignities. As a bonus, he has a bad body odor. He comes off as irredeemable, though in actuality his actions are less malicious than what you might expect of a punk. I know his backstory and why he acts this way (spoilers), and though he won't clean up his act, I know he is capable of love and is caring—and I can relate to that and his reasons for feeling a victim. He shows empathetic side of him in the story, though he's still kind of unforgivable. What happens is funny and vulnerable. Regardless, the moral is *don't work for the mob* if you want respectable coworkers.
