The US Treasury withdrew the "mixer rule" that would have threatened financial privacy tools. Sounds like a win. It's not.

On the same day, SDNY weaponized a new Second Circuit precedent from the Sterlingov case against Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm.

The court ruled that all deposits into a mixer further a criminal conspiracy because they increase the pool of funds "shuffling around and obscuring identities."

As The Rage reports, "it could mean that the United States might be able to charge anyone transacting with cryptocurrency mixers with conspiracy to commit money laundering."

The mixer rule is dead, but regulation by prosecution is alive and well. The government doesn't need a rule when it has a precedent.
