What you have today is a variety called the Cavendish banana. The variety before it was wiped out in the 1950s by a disease called Fusarium wilt of banana (FWB).
And now a new strain of FWB is back once again threatening global banana production - with new research offering some limited clues into how banana farmers could fight back.
