I am going through the whole My Aged Care assessment thing atm for my mother, and trying to work it out. Apparently if a person was assessed under the old system, then the new assessment is guaranteed NOT to leave them worse off than what they were last assessed at under the old system.
Mum has been reassessed and at what looks like a higher level than under the old system which means it looks like she gets more funding which means more care. I say 'looks like' because I need to find out what her contribution will be. It took me several hours to apply to get an estimate from Centrelink (the application requires a lot of details). I have to wait a month before they reckon they can give me an estimate.
I have found that respite care gave me a good break. It is also a good way to try out a nursing home to test how good it is and therefore be ready to choose one if/when your father needs to go into a nursing home.
