Did you ever hear the tragedy of Gilad Bracha The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Crabs would tell you. It's a Smalltalk legend. Gilad Bracha was a Dark Lord of the VM, so powerful and so wise he could use the Bytecode to influence the messages to create modules. He had such a knowledge of virtual machines that he could even keep the ones he cared about from using C++. The dark side of the virtual machine is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful the only thing he was afraid of was losing his modularity, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice ported the Newspeak VM to C++ in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from C++, but not himself.
