I personally have a very dim view of "basic" hygiene. Horror stories like the OP serve the companies that sell body products very well, scaring us into overcompensating. When another grotesquery like this shows up, I like to remind everyone to keep as clean as you need to, and stay safe. But not more than that. Vastly more people have had allergic reactions to soap and other applied chemicals, than the one time there were consequences in avoiding them to an unhealthy degree, but their stories don't show up on your feed.
And how much of your desire to "put effort" into your wardrobe has been manufactured by the clothing industry? There is nothing outside of government contracts more lucrative than clothing, and all they have to do is show people on TV who care by purchasing their products, while the slobs in comparison are horrible people living miserable lives.
Dress how you like, but be very careful before judging someone else based on horror stories and Hollywood smiles.
