There are two obvious answers...
First, most families own more than one car. They don't all have to be EV's. Maybe they use their other car/van/suv for long distance. The EV is for urban/suburban travel. They charge at home off of 120v and just drive.
Second, they just use the EV for the long trips. There are plenty of people posting videos of driving vast distances in their EV's. They just pace it differently.
But it's a good question.
