The approach we take regarding safety on Babka Social is generally what I'm calling "Quiet Safety". We quietly block accounts, quietly Limit servers, etc.
The upside of this approach is that for the users, they don't see the work that goes into it, and they don't have to deal with the terrible hate, etc.
The downside is that this leads to a great deal of invisible labor on our part. It also sometimes leads to strange technical situations where someone may not see a reply, or they might have to manually confirm a follow request even if they have an open follow policy.
