95 % of victims of gender-based violence are women
TW: Sexual violence

Women around the world face gender-based and sexual violence as a daily threat; in their homes, at work, in public and while on the move. The World Health Organisation estimates that globally, nearly 1 in 3 of women worldwide have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.

Sexual violence is particularly prevalent in crisis regions due to its use as a weapon of war. The highest number of reports come from Sudan, where survivors report rape, sexual slavery, and other forms of sexual violence. According to Amnesty International, the paramilitary group RSF has often been described as the perpetrator.

But the reality is that this violence does not end when women flee.

According to UNHCR, up to 90% of women crossing the Mediterranean report having suffered rape or sexual violence before or during their journey.

This is preventable.

We need safe routes, real protection, accountability for perpetrators, and the dismantling of the systems - patriarchal, racist, militarised - that protect and perpetuate this violence.
