I'm not going to take an always good or bad stance. The mobile Mastodon client I use (Ice Cubes) has a feature when posting an image with a post where when adding alt-text you can ask for an AI-generated description. (It is a manual control, not automatic.) And sometimes I am at a loss for words, and will use that as a starting point - the text it provides is usually pretty decent.

It's not perfect. It will confuse sunrises with sunsets, for example. So I always check what it suggests and make corrections. It is also the case that it will usually suggest a more descriptive text than I would have added myself, and my goal is to provide a meaningful description for those with assistive technology, so they are probably getting a richer experience than the much shorter text than I would have proivded.
