The first 3D-printed “steak” has hit U.S. grocery shelves.

Steakholder Foods, an Israeli food-tech company, is now selling a steak-style product made using 3D-printing technology.

It starts with soy protein that’s turned into a printable mixture, then fed through a machine that builds the product layer by layer to mimic the look and texture of steak.

One of the ingredients is methylcellulose—a compound also used in some pharmaceutical laxatives.

The finished product may look like a cut of beef, but it isn’t beef at all. It’s a plant-based product engineered to resemble steak.

And here’s what consumers should pay attention to:

Don’t assume the front of the package will scream “3D PRINTED.”

Read the ingredient list. Read the label.

If something is designed to look like meat without actually being meat, consumers deserve to know exactly what they’re buying.
