It protects the soil, keeps the water from evaporating and can help add organic matter into the soil- meaning it will hold more water over time.
Grow more Perennial veg- should be well established and able to resist temp changes/extremes as they have more resources stored.
Store as much rainwater as possible for use in the garden (water butts and also in the soil)
Leave more weeds! Keep the ground covered if possible.
