It should mostly be ended because of its obsolescence, really. Everything else is just additional reason to do so.
Solar became practical in the 1980s at the latest. There has been no reason not to deprecate all fossil fuels since.
Cars were obsolete in cities *before they were invented*, and the same applies even more so for freight (trains are old).
