I say a healthy level of scepticism is great!
A professionally printed sign (of a paid-to-protest group) on the back of this guy would have raised my suspicion, but it seems to be handwritten and even not professionally plastified to protect it against water.
Then there is a reference to 3 different open source projects (bitchat & briar & signal) mentioned, where due to its nature gov cannot use your communication log and plans against you. And the URLs are the correct ones.
It's (to me in this case) just informing young protestors at a very late (but not too late) stage that there are better ways to communicate if you don't want to be retroactively held accountable for stuff by a gov that does not want you to be there.
Then people should check they are not downloading something malicious, which is always a danger ofcourse, but also because sharing of the app option between phones is trust based. The version hash should be verified just to be sure you have the unaltered version everyone else has...
The nature of bitchat seems to be decentralized and end-to-end encrypted, which makes use of altered versions of bitchat (or honeypots) not have a great deal of impact in large crowds. The chat will remain working for most, which is the goal, so the majority can organize (and even apply consensus rules with enough "nodes" is my guess)
Bluetooth (one mode used by bitchat) can locally be easily jammed though, because the power required is not a lot. But in crowds this is a different story. You need to jam everywhere at the same time in order to stop any signal being able to hop from one phone to another to another (non-realtime store-and-forward). And then jamming a message to prevent it from reaching its end-point suddenly becomes very hard to pull off.
Hence it is working and therefore suggested to use in these particular scenarios.
A small effort by many can create something very powerful.
TikTok, SnapChat and Insta are the centralized and addictive honeypots one should avoid at all cost. Especially the ones know to be owned by foreighn powers, with foreighn intentions, not nessesarily less evil than your own country's intentions towards you.
