“So you're telling me the difference between financial freedom and lifelong debt servitude was... the ability to run a node?”
“More or less.”
“And they had computers?”
“Billions.”
“And the internet?”
“Everywhere.”
“And they could verify their own money?”
“Technically, yes.”
“So what stopped them?”
“Well, they preferred asking banks whether their money existed, regulators whether they were allowed to move it, and credit agencies whether they deserved to borrow some of it back.”
“Good heavens. What happened when they couldn't pay?”
“They were charged more.”
“And when they couldn't pay that?”
“They were charged even more.”
“Surely somebody noticed?”
“Certainly. They formed committees to investigate financial exclusion. The committees required funding, compliance departments, and several additional committees.”
“Did nobody simply run a node?”
“A few did. They were initially considered dangerous extremists for insisting that arithmetic should be independently verifiable.”
“And the rest?”
“They spent several generations debating whether financial freedom was sufficiently regulated to be safe.”
The Guide records this as one of the more peculiar episodes in terrestrial civilisation.
An entire species developed distributed consensus, cryptographic ownership, and permissionless settlement.
Then continued paying institutions to tell them what their balances were.
Of course, a node couldn't magically eliminate debt or poverty. But combined with self-custody, it offered something remarkably unfamiliar: independent verification without institutional permission.
The historical spread between autonomy and dependence was not merely wealth.
It was also the capacity to operate your own infrastructure.
The banks called this a systemic risk.
The future called it a computer.
