yeah, I also believe it's for the startup chime too. I'd expect Asahi to store the volume independently, but there is a chance they tried to implement it in 'the right way' for macs, but didn't quite get it right. Just one of the theories to check, unless you already researched it and learned the nvram value is indeed not used.
