The thing that always strikes me when I speak to an American over here (and I apologise for generalising) is how important they seem to assume that we both agree their country is in my everyday life. They seem to assume that we spend quite a lot of time thinking about America, and that we all agree that America is exceptional.
This is a bad example, but an American was just saying to me that until America came along no one had figured that you could try to overturn a red card in football.
