My novel-writing experience is very small. I've written more short stories and poems, and a lot more songs. I find that I take one of two paths:<li> Know the ending before starting. When I do this, the sensation is like having a frame of a particular shape and a few bold lines inside it, and trying to fill the frame in the best way I can.</li><li> Not knowing the ending before starting. This feels like getting in the car with a friend who hasn't told me where we're going, what we'll be doing, or how long it will take. I know I'll have an important say in all of these things, but I also know that circumstances will keep changing my preferences and what makes sense for the next steps.</li>
Like you, I prefer path 2. I've had some good experiences with path 1, but path 2 is what I love, maybe because it feels more like my life.
