In fact, one of the top people at the facility was a TD on 2001. He was in charge of all the wonderful instrumentation displays. He got a FULL PAGE credit to himself in
the closing credits of 2001. We also had a private preproduction screening of 2001 over in one of the studio screening rooms (at Paramount I think -- others were at TODD-AO, Directors' Guild, etc.) I once pulled him aside and asked how humans were ever supposed to be able to interpret all that stuff on the displays, and he said, "That's the point! Without the computers, without HAL, it was impossible." He also had little HAL9000 stickers that showed up around the plant. Wonderful guy. Thing is, all of that wasn't enough override the production design's earlier decisions. And when I convinced them to go to rectangular screens, they came back a few days later and said it wasn't going to happen because the round ones were already cast in fiberglass and there was no budget to redo them. So, missed it by THAT much.
