I wonder now how much of the female counselor's belief was maybe related more to bitterness about her own career choice? Maybe she didn't want to be working at all, she just wanted to an at-home mother, but they couldn't afford it?
A few decades ago, the occupational category of "secretary" disappeared at least in the medium-large businesses I worked for then...so maybe not a very good career choice...
