The Road to Morrón
There are mountains you can see from everywhere.
Morrón in Sierra Espuña is one of them. For anyone who grew up in Totana, that silhouette is as much a part of the landscape as the bell tower or the road home. It is always there. So ever-present that, over the years, you stop seeing it.
That is the danger of the familiar: it becomes invisible.
This photograph is an attempt to look at it anew. A narrow road among pine trees, as straight as a decision, and in the distance, the rock lit up as if someone had switched on a spotlight just for it. The rest of the world in shadow. The sky almost black.
I converted it to black and white because the color distracted me. The green of the pines, the blue of the sky, the ochre of the stone… it was all too pretty, too much like a brochure. Without color, only the essentials remained: the light, the shape, and the distance you have to travel to get there.
Because that is what this image tells me. Not the mountain. The road toward it.
That even what is close at hand must be sought out.
