Why Jalen Hurts Played Through a Blood Clot and What It Means for the NFL

In early December, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts experienced a sudden episode of shortness of breath and swelling in his leg after a routine practice. Medical staff performed an ultrasound that revealed a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition in which a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the leg. According to the CDC on blood clot, DVT can lead to serious complications if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs.
Hurts’ condition was classified as a “non‑occlusive” clot, meaning it did not completely block blood flow. While this type can be less immediately dangerous, the risk of embolism remains. The Eagles’ team physician consulted the American Heart Association for guidance on treatment and clearance protocols.
