I was watching the news when it happened. I always watched the news when the Intrepid was on. After all, my girlfriend was the chief engineer. I'm just a mathematician, nothing like the oh so practical Erica. She'd been the one to put together our kitchen table, not me.
She'd been working with the Intrepid project for about five years - she'd been the head of the line when they were looking for an engineering team. And the first to get the control implants that would be needed to turn the spaceship into a starship.
So of course I was watching when they fired up the hyperwave drive. And I was watching when the ship blew up.
The inquiries started at once, and despite my grief, I followed them. I even re-ran the maths. I reached the same conclusion as the inquiry did. And it only took a few days for them to release their first conclusion.
There simply was no way the hyperwave engine could cause the ship to explode.
Which meant sabotage. Someone had murdered the crew of five. Including my girlfriend.
